Lipo"Confused"?, Learn a little about Lipo
Cosmetic procedures often come in many different forms - and liposuction is no exception. You may see SAL(suction assisted liposuction), UAL(ultrasound assisted liposuction), E-UAL(external ultrasound assisted liposuction), PAL(power assisted liposuction), Vaser (ultrasound assisted liposuction) and even Smart Lipo(laser lipolysis). So what are they all, and what's right for you?
The fat of the matter is that the most important distinction between the two types of liposuction is that one breaks up and removes the fatty tissue from under the skin by suction - a bit like a vacuum cleaner, whilst the other uses a laser to liquefy the fat so that it can drain out of the body via the lymphatic system.
When considering liposuction, we have to remember that fat is mixed together with strong fibrous tissue making it difficult to remove. With suction procedures such as SAL, Vaser, UAL, E-UAL or PAL, the surgeon first needs to loosen up all the fat cells.
This is done with injecting fluids, which is referred to as tumescent or 'wet' procedure. Secondly, either an ultrasound, a vibrating probe(PAL) or a laser is then used to break up the fat cells into loose, fluid-like material. Once the area is prepared, a small cannula is inserted and "hoovers up" all that loose fluid-like tissue.
Laser lipolysis or more commonly known as Smart Lipo is the laser method. Here, instead of using a suction canuula to remove fat cells, laser energy is used to liquefy the fat right there in your body. The fluid material is not suctioned out, but instead allowed to naturally drain out of the body via the lymphatic system.
Which is best?
Well, according to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), there is no consensus on which procedure is superior. The most important consideration is finding a skilled surgeon to perform whichever procedure you choose.
